At rebel iQ, we take the security of your WordPress website seriously. That's why we protect all client websites with two-factor authentication (2FA) using Google Authenticator.
What is Two-Factor Authentication?
Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your website beyond just a password. It requires:
- Something you know (your password)
- Something you have (your smartphone with the Google Authenticator app)
This means that even if someone discovers your password, they still can't access your website without also having your phone. According to security experts, this simple addition makes your website up to 99% less likely to be compromised.
How Google Authenticator Works
Google Authenticator generates temporary, time-based security codes that change every 30 seconds. Here's how it works:
- Your WordPress site and the Google Authenticator app share a secret key
- This key is used by a special algorithm to generate matching 6-digit codes
- The codes are synchronized based on the current time
- Each code only works for 30 seconds before a new one is generated
- The app works even without internet access or cell service, as it only needs the secret key and the current time
Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication (First-Time Users)
If this is your first time logging into your WordPress site managed by rebel iQ, follow these steps to set up two-factor authentication:
Step 1: Install the Google Authenticator App
- On Android: Download from Google Play Store
- On iPhone: Download from App Store
Step 2: First Login
- Go to your WordPress login page and enter your username and password
- You'll see a "Setup Two-Factor Authentication" screen
- Click the "Continue" button
Step 3: Set Up App-Based Authentication
- On the next screen, select "Mobile App"
- You'll see a QR code on the screen, along with a secret key (a series of letters and numbers)
- The QR code is simply a visual representation of the secret key that can be scanned with your phone
Step 4: Connect Your Phone
- Open Google Authenticator on your phone
- Tap the "+" button
- Choose one of these two options:
- EASIEST METHOD: Select "Scan QR code" and point your camera at the QR code on your screen
- ALTERNATIVE METHOD: Select "Enter a setup key" and manually type the secret key shown on your computer screen
- Label the account (for example, "My WordPress Site")
Step 5: Complete Setup
- The app will now show a 6-digit code that changes every 30 seconds
- Enter the current code in the verification field on your WordPress site
- Click "Verify" to complete the setup
Step 6: Save Backup Codes
- After verification, you'll see backup codes - these are your emergency access codes
- Download or write down these codes and store them somewhere safe
- Each backup code can only be used once, so keep them secure
- You'll need these if you ever lose access to your phone
Step 7: You're All Set!
- Two-factor authentication is now active
- You'll be directed to your WordPress dashboard
Regular Login Process (After Setup)
Once you've completed the initial setup, here's how to log in to your WordPress site in the future:
- Visit your WordPress login page
- Enter your username and password
- When prompted for the verification code:
- Open the Google Authenticator app on your phone
- Look for your site in the app and find the current 6-digit code
- Enter this code on the WordPress site
- Click "Verify" to complete the login
- You'll now have access to your WordPress dashboard
Troubleshooting Tips
If Your Codes Aren't Working
- Check that the time on your phone is correct (the codes are time-based)
- Make sure you're using the most current code shown in the app
- Try waiting for a new code to generate (every 30 seconds)
If You Get a New Phone
- Install Google Authenticator on your new device
- Use one of your backup codes to log in to WordPress
- Go to your user profile and reset the two-factor authentication
- Follow the initial setup steps again with your new phone
If You Lose Access to Your Phone
- Use one of your saved backup codes to log in
- If you don't have your backup codes, contact rebel iQ support for assistance
