If you've tried uploading an image directly to a blog post, team member page, or another section of your WordPress site and received an error — you're not doing anything wrong. WordPress sites on our platform have a specific process for image uploads that's a little different from what you might expect. This article walks you through how it works.
Why Can't I Upload Images Directly?
To keep your website secure, direct image uploads within blog posts, team pages, and other content sections are restricted by default. This helps protect your site from security risks.
Images need to be uploaded through the Media Library using a tool called Apple Simple, and then attached to the section where you'd like them to appear.
How the Process Works
Uploading images on your WordPress site is a two-step process:
Step 1: Upload Your Image via the Media Library
- Log in to your WordPress admin panel
- In the left-hand menu, click Media, then click Library
- At the top of the Media Library page, you'll see the Directory Unlock Apple Simple status bar
- Click "Directory Unlock Apple Simple" to temporarily unlock the upload window
- Wait for the green "READY TO UPLOAD – It's Safe to Add Files Now!" message to appear — this means the directory is unlocked and ready (the window stays open for 15 minutes)
- Click "Add New" or "Select Files" in the upload area to upload your image
- Your image is now saved in your Media Library
⚠️ Important: Make sure you see the green "READY TO UPLOAD" message before attempting to upload. If it's not showing, the directory is still locked and the upload will fail.
Step 2: Attach the Image to Your Desired Location
Once the image is uploaded in the Media Library, navigate to the section where you'd like it to appear — your blog post, team member page, etc. — and select the already-uploaded image from the media library rather than uploading a new file.
